Before

No judgement zone because this closet was hideous. My closet was the dumping ground when I moved into my home back in November. While organizing my closet I decided to do things a little differently.

Supplies: (Click image for direct product link)

Tools:

Miter Saw or have Lowes cut it to size.

To begin I took the measurements of the Ikea Billy Bookcases online. I used the measurements to map out with tape where I wanted my shelves to go and how many I needed to order. I played around with the dimensions of both sizes and I sketched out my closet to get a visual of what it would look like. There are so many variations that can be done if you maximize your space for efficient flow and functionality.

Filling holes left by wire shelving with drydex. It will turn white when ready to sand.

I also pulled up the carpet because I am not a carpet person. I was not sure what I wanted to do with the floors but I was sure I did not want carpet. The bookcases are pre-curved at the bottom to go over baseboard but you may have to remove to baseboards optimize space. I only removed baseboard on one wall due to placement issues.  I also patched up the walls where the old wire shelving were using DryDex. I sand down the walls and painted them white. I did not paint the areas mapped out with tape that would not be shown due to bookcases.

Once the shelving units were delivered, I used included instructions to assemble them all. I waited to add the extension until the end for more agility when placing the bookcases in position.

Once I aligned to the pre-mapped measurements using the tape, I inspected to see if the space was functional with the placement.

Notice the placement to the right of the photo. You can literally explore your options when deciding on a placement.

Once placed to your liking and extensions add, anchor bookcases to the wall using included instructions (its really easy).

I purchased rods from Lowes to go into the already pre-drilled holes within bookshelves.

For a more polished look I used  1×2 pre-primed pine board to trim the seams where the bookcases meet. I cut the wood to size using miter saw and adhered it to the bookcases using liquid nails. I also used 2 1/4 ” clips to add more support to the trim pieces however, the nail glue was pretty sufficient. I then painted the trim using wall color paint.

You can also use MDF or unprimed boards for a cheaper option.

Had from previous projects.

If you are a pro you could even go as far as to caulking the seams for an even more flawless look. However, this can be time consuming.

I could not find a tile that would fit my style so I decided to paint the subfloor as a place holder. I sealed the cracks in the floor for a smooth even finish using DryDex. The paint color I chose was Rugged Tan by BEHR.

This paint selection definitely warmed up the room giving it a very elegant feel. Paint Color: Rugged Tan By BEHR

Last thing to do is style it to your liking. If you have checked out my YouTube you would know most of the things in here were thrifted from Goodwill. If you have not seen it check it out (YouTube)

There are so many ways to hack the Ikea Bookcase to match your personal style. Get creative with it and I hope this blog helps you get closer to your dream closet.
